Group Elephant's Mendix and AWS practices in the US collaborate to enhance application scalability for global education focused on nonprofit Cognia

Group Elephant’s Mendix and AWS practices in the US collaborate to enhance application scalability for global education focused nonprofit Cognia.

Established through the merger of AdvancED and Measured Progress, Cognia is a global nonprofit serving 36,000 institutions across 90 countries. They support circa 18 million students and 800,000 educators daily with accreditation, certification, assessment and other services.

Having to deal with increased system demand and seasonal peaks with over 10,000 simultaneous users, Cognia engaged our Group to build a more scalable system to power engagement with its members and constituents. The application was built by our Group’s Mendix practice, using the Mendix low-code application development platform, and leveraging the guidance and support of our AWS specialist practice, Cognia deployed the new application on AWS-managed Kubernetes cluster. The AWS ‘Karpenter’ utility is used to achieve availability and cluster efficiency. Karpenter launches right-sized compute resources based on changing application load and it is coupled with  horizontal pod autoscaling, to improve scaling by deploying more pods based on resource utilization.

‘We are pleased with the work done to put in place what is a genuinely scalable and cost-effective arrangement’ said the Vice President of Software Engineering at Cognia.
